Got my quilts all in a row...

It has been a normal weekend day here. Lots of odd jobs to do but I still managed to get some quilty stuff done. First up I managed to convince my lovely, still sleepy, hubby to come with me to a local park and help me hang all the soldier's quilts on the chain link fence there so I could get a photo of all of them at once.  We went first thing because it was already warm and I didn't want to be out in the sun hanging quilts any later in the day.

I also had a surprise visit.  Fly Boy's Warrant Office from cadets dropped me in a bunch of old cadet uniforms for me to cut up.  I asked him a few weeks ago if there were any that had outlived their usefulness could I please have some to cut up for quilts and he said he was sure he could find some.  True to his word look what I got.  I reckon these will make some great quilts for teenage boys and maybe for the soldiers too though maybe they see enough of this pattern.
For the time being they need to be put aside till after Christmas.

This afternoon I managed to cut out three laundry bags and even got one sewn up.  I have folded it so that you can see the starry casing for the cord as well as the initials.  This bag is for fellow quilt member Lyn's boss' nephew.  He is getting one of our quilts too.
This is another special laundry bag for a soldier going to Afghanistan in the next couple of months.  This was made by Andrea for one of OUR Gumnut babies!  You might not get that if you aren't Australian but an Author called Louisa May Alcott wrote a book about Gumnut Babies - it is well known in Australia.  Anyway we are the Gumnut quilters and the soldier getting this laundry bag is the son of one of our group.  That makes him a Gumnut baby - now look closely at the fabric.  Andrea found this years ago and it is only used for special projects.  It is lined with a camel coloured fabric and we are all going to sign it before we give it to him.
I folded the bottom up to make it fit into the photo better and so I could show you the fabric better.

The rest of my night tonight was spent sorting out brown fabrics for the rainbow scrap challenge.  This month's colour is brown - not quite sure what I will make this month though I am tending towards a quilt that can go on my favourite brown leather chair that my way too cute dogs think belongs to them!  I need to protect the leather from their nails.  Anyway, in the mean time I have to make some blocks for my swap with Celia.  She told me hers are already in the mail - she is way too quick.  I plead soldier's quilts and laundry bags as a defence!

Till next time...........happy stitching!

  1. Oh, chain-link fences in the park. That is my photo location as well. They do look great. You have really run with this ball all the way to the goal! I guess that could be an excuse for not completeing any number of tasks.

  2. The row of quilts is amazing! I am sure they will be appreciated! I saw a relatively new book called "Deploy That Fabric" that's all about how to reuse uniform material to make sewing projects. Maybe your library has it?
